ESANS Events & Announcements

April 21, 2010 - Release, Review, Respond, and Renew
"ESANS Day with the Governments" - Marriott Harbourfront, Halifax

This event provides the opportunity for ESANS led interactions with Government representatives and for ESANS members to individually contribute to these interactions.

For ESANS members providing environmental services, the federal, provincial, and municipal governments are at times regulators, clients, and in other ways influential.

Opportunities for useful interaction with government representatives is a relatively high priority for ESANS members in the actions of their association. The federal, provincial and municipal government seek to communicate and consult on a variety of topics that are of interest to ESANS members. Interactions with ESANS members can be a relatively valuable contribution to government communication, consultation, and outreach efforts.

We are in the process of extending invitations, developing the program, and discussing formats with potential representatives.

We anticipate a mixture of Panel Discussions - Breakout Sessions - Audience Q and A. The results would be documented and conveyed in a follow up ESANS report in May.

For the event program, while unconfirmed and still under development, we are ambitiously targeting topics such as:

Activity Plan for 2010 COP 16 Mexico
UN Climate Change Conference Preparations

Participants of this event were ESANS members who went to COP15 Copenhagen in 2009; current or potential ESANS members who may be going to Mexico in November 2010; and associated Province of Nova Scotia and Government of Canada representatives interested in the coordination of local people who intend to be in Mexico.
Click here to view who attended COP 15 via ESANS

The intent of the meeting was to build on the lessons learned in our organized efforts in attending the Copenhagen and earlier UN Climate Change conferences. ESANS has Observer Status at these conferences. ESANS members attending the 2009 conference came from a variety of environmental service provider backgrounds - individual, academic, government, industry, business, and consultants.

ESANS is starting to plan now for COP 16 in Mexico which will be held near the end of 2010. ESANS is preparing a living, evolving, "Activity Plan" to help in the planning and coordination of a mixture of people from ESANS, the Province of Nova Scotia, and the Government of Canada. An early version of this "Activity Plan" will be available for discussion.

Please email Cameron Ells, P.Eng. at Government@ESANS.ca if you are interested in this initiative, planning to attend COP 16, or seeking more details.

Site Development & Preparation Workshop
"Think before you Dig" - February 5, 2009

Before work is conducted at a site, potential environmental, physical, and cultural impacts must be considered. This reduces the opportunity for an unintended and unplanned surprise that can significantly delay or derail the work, associated cost overruns, and for unacceptable environmental and / or cultural heritage impacts.

This workshop presented multiple stakeholder interests, and identify requirements associated with land development and intrusive activities.

Utility representatives reviewed their tracking and locating programs. Lawyers and insurance representatives discussed the risks involved with insufficient site preparation. Jay Hartling of the NS Office of Aboriginal Affairs explained important considerations for site work.
