CAR SHARE HFX
CarShareHFX provides a service that provides individuals, families, businesses and organizations with easy, self-serve access to a varied fleet of vehicles on an hourly rental basis, 24/7/365.
In HRM, carsharing complements existing modes of mobility such as walking, cycling, motor scooters, taxis, carpooling, rental cars and Metro Transit. By reducing our dependency on individually owned motor vehicles, carsharing can reduce traffic congestion, vehicle emissions and save members money and increase their fiscal flexibility.
CarShareHFX provides a self-serve system using state of the art technologies. Reservations are made online or by phone. Members access their reserved CarShareHFX vehicle with a personal electronic key (fob) at any time of day, any day of the year. CarShareHFX vehicles are located throughout HRM neighbourhoods and business districts.
CarShareHFX brought carsharing back to Halifax in December 2008.
Established in North America first in Québec City in 1993, carsharing has grown to some 40 carshare organizations currently serving some 380,000 members with 10,000 vehicles in 57 cities and towns and 25 universities, with a Canadian annual growth rate of over 30% in 2009. (July 2009)
Typically in Canada there are 25 members for each carshare vehicle. Carsharing replaces personally or corporately owned cars for 30 - 40% of the joining members, so 1 carshare vehicle reduces the number of cars competing for street space and parking by 7 to 10 cars. Montreal research pegged the per capita reduction in a CSO member's annual travel-related emissions at more than 1.3 tonnes of CO2.
