CAPE BRETON DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION
The Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) is a crown corporation that operated coal mines in the Cape Breton, Sydney coal field since the mid 1960's. In the late 1990's the Gov't of Canada decided it was no longer going to mine coal. The last mine closed in 2001 and since that time has been dealing with the Human Resource and Environmental issues.
In 2001 CBDC engaged Public Works Government Services Canada to manage the corporations environmental closure plan. Site Remediation is scheduled to be completed by 2011. It is estimated that long term care and monitoring will continue for an additional 20 years.

DEFENCE CONSTRUCTION CANADA
Since the early 1990s, DCC has provided environmental science and environmental engineering services to DND. Now, these services make up a significant part of the Corporation’s business. Increasingly, as DND is faced with more environmental challenges, DCC’s environmental capabilities continue to expand to meet these needs.
Environmental Services works with DND to meet environmental performance targets, comply with regulatory requirements, and manage due diligence and risk. Some of the service line’s key activities include:

This means we can meet DND’s rigorous operational needs and the federal government’s contracting policy with the very latest in environmental protection and management.

MUNICIPALITY OF THE DISTRICT OF GUYSBOROUGH
The Municipality of the District of Guysborough (MODG) is one of four municipal units in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. Occupying the eastern half of Guysborough County, the District's administrative centre is located in the Shiretown of Guysborough.
The Municipality completely surrounds the towns of Canso and Mulgrave and borders the St. Mary's municipal district to the West, Antigonish County to the North and the Strait of Canso to the East. It was incorporated in 1879 and covers an area of 2,111 square kilometres.
The Municipal Public Works Department is responsible for such services as municipal water, wastewater, sidewalks, municipal buildings, parks, recreational infrastructure and other municipal properties. The Municipal Public Works Department is also responsible for all aspects of municipal services and routine maintenance of the Municipality of Guysborough’s buildings and capital assets.

NOVA SCOTIA TRANSPORTATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE RENEWAL
Within Nova Scotia’s transportation infrastructure, services are administered through four district
offices, located in Sydney, Truro, Bridgewater, and Bedford, and the head office located in the
Johnston Building in Halifax.
The Department is responsible for maintaining 4,100 bridges and approximately 23,000 km of provincial roads, including 1,199 km of the National Highway System – the highway system that connects Nova Scotia to the global community. We operate and maintain approximately 1,300 pieces of highway maintenance equipment, four cable ferries, and three self-propelled ferries.
We play a variety of roles in the development of a safe transportation system, supporting the economic prosperity of Nova Scotia. We also coordinate the province’s position on air, marine, rail and road transportation issues involving the federal government.

NOVA SCOTIA LANDS INC.
Nova Scotia Lands Inc. is a Provincial Crown corporation whose mandate is to access and where required remediate and redevelop crown-owned properties. Also, NS Lands is manager of the newly existing Harbourside Commercial Park in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Currently NS Lands is remediating and redeveloping the remainder of the former Sydney Steel Plant property. In addition, NS Lands is responsible for other properties acquired by previous owners of the Sydney Steel Plant.
These properties include tracts of land located in Sydney Mines, Sydney River, Grand Lake area, Catalone, Pictou, New Glasgow and Grand Narrows. The properties contain abondoned quarries, coal mines and areas encrouched upon by residential and industrial areas.This website will keep the public informed on remediation results and areas that will be addressed.

PUBLIC WORKS & GOVERNMENT SERVICES CANADA
Within Public Works and Government Services Canada, Real Property Services’ (RPS’s) environmental services portfolio is designed to help federal departments cost-effectively “green” their operations and comply with environmental legislation.
RPS assists departments across Canada with managing their due diligence and risk, as well as with integrating pollution prevention practices into their operations. The goal is to make a positive contributions to the principles of sustainable development and to ensure that the natural environment will be healthy for generations to come.
The key services they manage include:
- Conducting environmental assessments in accordance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA)
- Developing sustainable development strategies and supporting environmental management systems based on recognized standards such as the ISO 14000 series;
- Developing and delivering environmental training programs for management, professional, technical and trades staff on the implications of imminent provincial and federal policies and legislation/codes (CEAA, Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Canada Labour Code, National Fire Code, Fisheries Act)
- Performing environmental audits to ensure a department’s environmental management system is functioning and that staff or services providers are meeting policy and regulatory requirements
- Managing contaminated lands by performing site assessments, risk analysis and remediation, e.g. Argentia Remediation - Managing hazardous and non-hazardous wastes.
