MINAS BASIN PULP & POWER CO. LTD.

As the first pulp and paper company in Canada to manufacture its products from 100% post consumer waste fibre, Minas Basin Pulp and Power has a long history of environmental responsibility. This family owned company which opened in 1927, has become an internationally recognized leader in environmental stewardship. Our corporate policy which states our mantra of meeting or exceeding all environmental standards and regulations. We operate with a mission of "productivity through people, quality and the environment," and have received nation and international awards for our progressive and environmental policies. It is the first mill in Nova Scotia and one of the first in Canada to be in total compliance with all Federal Pulp and Paper Effluent Regulations.

We are located in Hantsport, Nova Scotia, approximately 45 minutes from the ice-free port of Halifax. By road, we have overnight access to Quebec, Ontario and New England.

As early as the 1930s, founder Roy A Jodrey invested in renewable energy, constructing hydroelectric facilities to power the plant. We have attained the EcoLogo Certification for the production of green energy for our hydro division. In the 1990s, Minas Basin made the decision to change from using logs, to feedstock solely from 100% recycled paper in the production of our paperboard. As a result, the company is saving 1.5 million trees and avoiding nearly 11 million cubic feet of landfill space annually.

Minas recently installed a state-of-the-art heat recovery system and with other environmental practices, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 270,000 tonnes per year saving electricity required to power 38,000 homes. Minas Basin's interests are as diverse as the interests of their parent company, Scotia Investments Ltd. Minas Basin has shown the world their appetite for sound sustainable practices that are good not only for our company but also for our community. We are actively involved in a number of energy projects: wind, plastic to diesel, biomass cogeneration, energy conservation, carbon trading, supplying energy to municipal utilities, wave energy and tidal. We are very proud to be partnering in the FORCE project with Marine Current Turbines out of England. Minas Basin was charged with the responsibility of leading the design and construction of the FORCE facility in the Minas Passage. Our commercial-scale turbine is scheduled to be installed in 2012.
